In recent months, DPS MP Delyan Peevski, who is sanctioned for corruption under the global “Magnitsky” law, has been more visible and more active than ever. After the resignation of Mustafa Karadai as the leader of the DPS, Peevski took over the operational leadership of the movement.
Peevski vs. Denkov: a history of clashes
DPS was established in 1990 by Ahmed Dogan, who was also its first chairman. After that, the post was held by Lutvi Mestan and Mustafa Karadai.
The party arose after the forced renaming of the Bulgarian Turks and their mass deportation to Turkey in the 1980s. To this day, mostly Bulgarian Muslims vote for her, who believe that the DPS is a guarantor of their rights.
In 2013, Peevski was already a businessman and politician from DPS. His candidacy for the head of DANS brought thousands of people to protest.
10 years later, he acts as a spokesperson for the authorities in Bulgaria.
In “Studio Bulgaria” of “Free Europe”, we talked about the processes in the DPS with Güner Tahir, a former member of the party’s leadership, who more than two decades ago left the DPS and founded the National Movement for Rights and Freedoms (NDPS).
Highlights from the interview
“Dogan needs money. Maybe he thinks that with the new chairman Delyan Peevski he will solve his financial problems”. “There is speculation in the DPS that they are the biggest Euro-Atlanticists and that they have always been consistent. But even the speeches of the honorary chairman Ahmed Dogan do not speak of such consistency”. “Peevski wants to get out of [санкционния] “Magnetic” list. [Но] if he is pro-Russian, if he wants to support Russia and if he is against the sanctions imposed on it by Europe and the world, how [би могъл] to go out! No way. What Delyan Peevski is saying right now is not the policy of the DPS, it is his personal policy.” “Alexei Petrov also held the flash cards [с компроматите], but it’s gone now. I don’t think flash drives can solve any problem for you in the long run. Rather, with flash cards you can threaten certain people for a certain time, but after that every problem finds its own solution”. “DPS is a travesty. This is a party that from the outside looks like a paramilitary organization, as many journalists praise it. On the contrary. It is a system eaten from within, and it is a colossus with feet of clay. It will collapse.”
Why Peevski is important to Dogan
Ahmed Dogan is addicted to Peevski. This is what Guner Tahir said in “Studio Bulgaria” of Free Europe. “Dogan needs money and maybe he thinks that with the new chairman Delyan Peevski he will solve his financial problems,” said Tahir.
According to him, Dogan has a problem with the finances of “TPP-Varna” and the maintenance of the properties in the capital’s “Boyana” district and the residence in Rosenets. Tahir told about a conversation between him and the former prime minister and leader of GERB Boyko Borisov.
Why everything seems to revolve around Peevski: theories and facts
“He told me in a private conversation that Delyan brought him Agata. He called Ahmed Dogan that by his slippers in his residence in Boyana when he was prime minister (). I asked him the question: about the cold reserve of “TPP-Varna ” was it about? He said: “yes”. I don’t know more details,” said Tahir.
Ahmed Dogan is the owner of Varna Thermal Power Plant. The plant received over BGN 32 million from the state for providing cold reserve, balancing energy and available power.
In August, the tycoon was sentenced to pay BGN 35.5 million to the state gas supplier Bulgargaz for unpaid natural gas bills. “Delyan Peevski is brutal in certain ways in my opinion. He could provide those funds to Dogan that he needs,” said Tahir.
Peevski was not worried about his low rating and accused polling agencies of “defending someone”
With Russia or with NATO and the EU
“There is speculation in the DPS that they are the biggest Euro-Atlanticists,” said Guner Tahir. It is the Euro-Atlantic orientation of the DPS that is used as an argument by “We continue the change – Democratic Bulgaria” (PP-DB) and GERB for the partnership with the movement in governance.
“If you ask me why in the last few months Delyan Peevski has become such a zealous Euro-Atlanticist, the explanation is very simple. Why did Delyan Peevski and Boyko Borisov hug each other! So that one could leave the “Magnitsky” list and the other could not enter it Tahir said. According to him, Peevski’s goal is to get off the “Magnitsky” list.
“What Delyan Peevski is saying right now is not the policy of the DPS. It is his personal policy, which perhaps coincides with that of Dogan. Dogan is not on the lists, but there is an interest in having Peevski’s funds unblocked because of these obligations.” , Tahir said.
According to him, it will not be surprising if Peevski becomes prime minister. “Everything in Bulgaria is a conjuncture. But I think we won’t get there. Dreams are free. He can dream a little about being prime minister,” Tahir said.
One thing in mind: Delyan Peevski announced that he is ready for prime minister
Tahir said the presence of compromising information is no guarantee that matters will be resolved. “Alexei Petrov also had flash drives, but he is no longer there. I don’t think that flash drives can solve any problem for you in the long term. Rather, with flash drives, you can threaten certain people,” said Tahir. In his words, “there is no way to become someone in this country just on the basis of the fact that you have information about someone. For me, there are other objective processes that would not allow a person like Delyan Peevski to be prime minister”.
According to him, the upcoming changes in the DPS leadership are the final stage of the party’s development. “DPS is a travesty. It is a party that looks like a paramilitary organization from the outside, as many journalists praise it. On the contrary. It is a system eaten from the inside and it is a colossus with feet of clay. It will collapse,” said Tahir.
