Five US senators have called on US President Joe Biden to impose a travel ban on China following cases of respiratory illness there, Reuters reported.
The call was made by Republican senators led by Marco Rubio. They have called on Joe Biden’s administration to ban travel between the US and China after a rise in cases of respiratory illness in the Asian country.
“We must immediately restrict travel between the United States and China until we know more about the dangers posed by this new disease,” said the senators’ call, signed by Rubio, who is the top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee.
A surge in respiratory disease cases in China last week prompted the World Health Organization to ask Beijing for more information, citing a report of clusters of undiagnosed pneumonia in children received by the Emerging Diseases Surveillance Program, BTA reported.
Maria Van Kerkhove, acting director of WHO’s Division of Epidemic and Pandemic Preparedness and Prevention, said earlier this week that the rise in pneumonia cases appeared to be linked to an increase in the number of children contracting pathogens that the two years of restrictions due to Covid-19 in China, they have not managed to get infected.
In recent months, the US and China have increased flights between the two countries, but they are still below the level from before 2019. As of November 9, the number was 35 flights per week for each country, which is up from 12 flights per week in August, writes Actualno.com
