The presence of a nuclear missile shield makes the hopes of Western politicians to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia absurd.
This was stated by the director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service Sergey Naryshkin, quoted by TASS.
“The nuclear missile shield has so far protected our country. And the very presence of this shield makes the dreams of some Western politicians about a strategic defeat of Russia completely absurd,” Naryshkin believes.

He declared that Russia was the leading nuclear power in the world.
Naryshkin is probably talking about the A-135. It is an air defense system located around Moscow that should, in theory, be able to stop a nuclear attack by intercepting ICBM warheads. Originally designed in the Soviet Union, the A-135 entered service in 1995, later being renamed the A-235.

However, its effectiveness in a real nuclear war is in serious question, despite Naryshkin’s optimistic claims.

Nuclear warheads fly at a speed of over 20,000 km/h. After they are separated from the rocket, practically nothing can stop them. The US also developed such a system, investing billions of dollars, but eventually abandoned it. Instead, US defenses focus on early detection and interception of incoming missiles through a system of radars and satellites.
