More than 850 tons of kerosene were drained from a NATO base in Belgium and the fuel was sold through Italian gas stations, BTA reported.
The perpetrators of the theft are linked to international crime. Italian authorities have detained 46 alleged accomplices. It is specified that the illegal sales of the fuel lasted for four months.
It was found that 29 gas stations were involved in the scheme, with experts warning of possible damage to the engines of cars filled with the fuel sold there. It is added that the criminals mixed the stolen kerosene (jet fuel) with diesel distillates and obtained over a thousand tons of fuel. During the subsequent searches, three million euros were seized.
A year ago, a court case began in Belgium over the 2019 spill of two thousand tons of kerosene from a local NATO oil pipeline that reached Greece. The prosecutor’s office asked the defendants to cover damages for 2.4 million euros. Two years before this incident, another Pact base in Belgium reported the disappearance of 60 tons of fuel.
