Professor Nedelchev commented on the scandal with the Russian Church in Sofia and the expelled clerics who engaged in “activities directed against national security and interests”. “The canons of the Orthodox Church forbid the existence of alternative parallel structures in an autocephalous Orthodox Church. According to the law, only the Bulgarian Orthodox Church can dispose of both covered and uncovered property,” he said.

According to him, all institutions of a religious nature are regulated by the Law on Religions. “All establishments of a religious nature – churches, orphanages, etc. In order to open and operate these establishments, they must have the quality of a legal entity. Is the Russian Embassy a religious institution? Why would the Russian state represent a religious institution and is it hiding behind the diplomatic immunity of the Russian embassy?” asked theologian Prof. Dilyan Nedelchev.
