The Court of Appeal remanded former policeman Valentin Hristov, accused of participating in an organized criminal group for channeling, in custody.
He was extradited from Greece because of the death of 18 migrants found hidden in a truck near Lokorsko.
Hristov asked to be released from custody because of his deteriorating health and emphasized that he has been in the prison hospital for a month.

Bulgarian authorities discovered the bodies in a secret compartment under the trunk of a truck carrying timber and abandoned on a highway not far from Sofia in February.
The investigation then found that all the migrants had died of suffocation.
Seven people were arrested in connection with their deaths.
According to the prosecutor’s office, Hristov participated in the preparation of the truck. If convicted, the accused could face up to 10 years in prison.
