France’s decision to withdraw its troops from Niger after the coup in the West African country in July does not change the US position in Niger. This was stated today by State Department spokesman Matthew Miller, quoted by Reuters.
French President Emmanuel Macron said yesterday that 1,500 French troops would withdraw from Niger by the end of the year, dealing a heavy blow to French influence and counter-insurgency operations in the Sahel region, Reuters noted.
France has decided to withdraw its ambassador to Niger, we are also ending our military cooperation with Niger, Macron said in an interview with French media, quoted by BTA. The junta in Niger took power two months ago. Yesterday, it announced that it was banning French aircraft from entering Niger’s airspace.
