Semyon Novikov brought a third medal for Bulgaria from the World Wrestling Championships in Belgrade. The naturalized Ukrainian won bronze in the 87 kilogram category in the classical style.
Novikov put 6:3 points over Islam Abasov from Azerbaijan.
With the bronze award, Novikov won a quota for the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024. He is the only Bulgarian wrestler who managed to guarantee participation in the Games.
The Bulgarian team finished the world championship with three bronze medals. Before Novikov, Mimi Hristova (65 kg) and Ramazan Ramazonov (70 kg) also won in non-Olympic categories.
