The biggest derby in history in the Netherlands between Ajax (Amsterdam) and Feyenoord (Rotterdam) ended 0-3 after the home fans started throwing all kinds of fireworks onto the pitch.
Ajax supporters three times stopped the match with torches, firebombs and burning rags in plastic bottles, as well as beer and soft drink cups, thrown onto the pitch. However, at the next attempt, one of the best referees in the country, Serdar Gözübüyük, decided to put a premature end to the “De Klassiker” derby, urging both teams to go to the tunnel.
The three goals in his side’s goal will surely bring more pressure for coach Maurice Stein, who is in his first season at the club, replacing Jonny Hyting. Before today’s match, Ajax won one match, drew two and also had one loss. The grand team is not performing impressively in Europe either, where it sneaked into the Europa League with only one strong match – a 4:0 win over Ludogorets (Razgrad) in Bulgaria. The 12-time champions even walked away with a 1-0 win at the Johan Cruyff Arena. In the league, they are in 13th place and 10 points behind temporary leader PSV Eindhoven.
Elsewhere, Santiago Jimenez scored twice for defending Eredivisie champions Feyenoord, opening in the 9th minute and making it 2-0 in the 18th. Igor Paishalo made it 3:0 in the 37th minute before the match was stopped in the 55th minute. The duty delegate of the Netherlands Federation (KNVB), who was at the meeting, refused to explain to the media what was going to happen.
Last year, Ajax finished in 3rd place and for the first time in 13 years they failed to qualify for the Champions League, even through the qualifiers.
One of the popular newspapers in the country “De Telegraaf” reported that immediately after the match was abandoned, fans of the hosts started vandalism outside the stadium. Some of them even got into skirmishes with the law enforcement authorities, and others preferred to run away to save themselves from going into custody.
