In recent days, Facebook has taken down quite a few posts by journalists and activists. Here’s what I found out about the problem:
A malicious plugin for WordPress (the platform used by the sites) was uploaded to the websites of the Association of European Journalists and the fact-checking organization factcheck.bg.
Facebook has determined that the sites are infected and has removed posts containing links to them. Which, in itself, is the right thing to do.
The questions to be answered are:
– why Facebook does not send notifications to the administrative or so-called abuse emails of domains or hosting providers (I have already asked them)
– will they restore all deleted content once the malicious plugin is gone?
– how the sites were compromised and whether the attack was targeted in relation to the clear pro-European positions of AEZ and the fact that factcheck refutes Kremlin propaganda narratives, or is it a simple virus with a commercial purpose.
In this case, the problem is not with Facebook’s moderation practices, but there is room for improvement in the process.
