Gys Swarts (played by Justin Strydom) is the most hated man in the Deep waters-society, for various reasons, but even an enemy should know better than to try to bring about the man’s end in a swimming pool.
This week Gys wakes up from his coma after two weeks and the question on everyone’s lips is: “Who did this to you?”
It all started when Gys was discovered floating in the pool at the club during the launch party of his wife Meghan’s beauty range, Gush.
While Gys is still trying to remember what someone else is trying to forget, kykNET has drawn up a list of possible villains to give his memory a boost.
The culprit will soon be put to death, but this is far from the end of the secrets in this community. So many suspects, yet so few answers…
Meghan Swarts (played by Lea Viviers)
The woman certainly has a motive because she started a sly relationship with Jacques, Gys’s son, but does she have the drive to send Gys into ruin? Absolutely! She then lies to him about her feelings for him for a long time, entered into a marriage with him to carry out a revenge plan she planned with his nemesis, Zelda – and she knows exactly how to – and turning any other man’s head away from the truth with that horse figure of hers.
Rossouw Swarts (played by Altus Theart)
Gys and his son have not sat by the same fire for quite some time now, and Rossouw blames his father for everything that has gone wrong in his life lately. They have butted heads so badly over Rossouw’s choices (caused by Gys) that Rossouw was unemployed at one point. It’s no secret that Gys doesn’t have eyes for Rossouw’s new girlfriend, and that he even less thinks Rossouw knows what he’s doing with the impending divorce from Sanet. However, is this sufficient reason for attempted murder?
Anja Botha (played by Reandi Grey)
Gys forced Anja to have an abortion 20 years ago, little knowing that the child Anja was expecting would be his own grandchild. Anja has already made it very clear how she feels about Gys and even went as far as going to work at the swimming club as a coach to get her niece, Karla, out of his influence.
She knows that Gys is only interested in one thing, and she is sure that it is not the well-being of the swimmers under his coaching – after all, she has first-hand experience. Would it be the same hand that would send the man to his watery grave? It’s not like Anja doesn’t know her footwork, or craft, around a pool.
Jacques Swarts (played by Werner Coetser)
Jacques’ heart makes him a better man than his father, especially if that heart also wants to walk a path with his father’s new wife. Jacques is a trainer at the club, is built like a Greek god and can certainly hold his own around a pool. Is the guilt he has about the relationship with his stepmother enough reason for Jacques to want to get rid of his father permanently? Love may be the dark gas in many murder motives over the years, but when it is linked to a forbidden love it becomes that much more alluring.
Zelda Joubert (played by Sandi Schultz)
Zelda’s longstanding feud with Gys is well known, and also something she doesn’t even try to hide. No what, she advertises it at every turn – and could not reveal it to the community with greater shame after she was revealed as the secret investor and now the biggest shareholder of the club.
Wasn’t that revenge sweet enough? Is her plan to humiliate Gys forever derailed by Meghan’s forbidden love for Gys’ son? Didn’t Gys seem to have suffered enough with the reveal before the party that she will now forever be a thorn in his flesh? Was murder perhaps the icing on the revenge cake?
Johan Swarts (played by Liam Bosman)
The black sheep in the Swarts family has already done it all: He didn’t do wonders in matric, was temporarily suspended for drug abuse, almost became a father and is currently swimming for his grandfather Gys’ biggest competition.
What can Johan do to smear his name even blacker than the Swarts family is looking forward to? Anger is one thing, but revenge is another, and grandpa Gys has done more than his share to ensure that this hothead will steam for years to come. Maybe this was Johan’s only way to free himself from a yoke he never wanted to wear?
Karla Swarts (played by Danielle Swanepoel)
Trauma is something that one does not simply process in the blink of an eye – just ask the black butterfly in the Swarts family. We already know that Karla developed an eating disorder as a result of what her grandfather Gys did to her as a coach, but what if Karla maybe also started to notice all the other sins of her grandfather, and decided to do something about it?
They say the flap of a butterfly’s wing can cause a hurricane, but what if this flap of a wing might just prevent future earthquakes by getting rid of the source of so much pain?
Bybie (played by Lizz Meiring)
Where in the world is Bybie? We know that she is ‘somewhere’ to solve a sin from the past after Zelda threatens her with it, but we don’t know what exactly (or where!) it is. Would it be possible to put everyone under suspicion while no one even suspects the fun rabbedoo? Is it her invisible hand that tried to lead the man to his end? Maybe Gys has something to do with the threat that Zelda holds like a sword over Bybie’s head? Or was Gys perhaps the loose thread that needed to be destroyed?
Deep waters can be seen Mondays to Thursdays at 18:30 on kykNET (DStv channel 144).
