The police on Waterval in Limpopo launched a large-scale search on Monday after armed robbers ambushed and robbed security guards at the Elim Mall. A sixteen-year-old girl died in the shooting.
Col. Malesela Ledwaba, police spokesperson, says guards from a security company were collecting money at one of the shops at around 10:00, when they were ambushed.
“The security guards fired back and a shooting broke out,” says Ledwaba.
A 16-year-old girl and a 26-year-old man were wounded in the crossfire.
“They were taken to the nearest hospital for treatment. The 16-year-old victim died there from her injuries.”
According to Ledwaba, the suspects fled the scene in a white Toyota Hilux.
Maj. Gen. Jan Scheepers, acting provincial police chief, appealed to the community to provide information that could lead to the arrest of the attackers.
“When we stand together, nothing can defeat us. It is high time that criminals realize that there is no room for them in our society,” said Scheepers.
Anyone with information is asked to Capt. Call Mabunda on 082 565 7901 or the Stop Crime number on 08600 10111.
The investigation continues.
