Where does it come from?
Cat purr may have been used just for the rhyme, but there are two other possible explanations. The purr of a cat produces nothing and is therefore worthless, like the first winnings of the newcomer. The other possibility is that cat purr equated here with cat love. It is a false love, because a cat will purr one moment and then suddenly scratch the hand of its owner. By extension, this is therefore false gain.
