South Africans can expect a slight relief in alternating current phases over the weekend thanks to lower demand for power.
Eskom indicated on Friday that phase 6 load shedding will be reduced to phase 5 on Saturday between 05:00 and 16:00.
Phase 6 will kick off again on Saturday at 16:00 and run until Sunday at 05:00. This phase will then be lowered to phase 4 at 16:00 on Sunday.
However, Phase 6 will then apply again until Monday at 05:00.
Eskom says 17,093 MW of capacity is currently unavailable due to breakdowns, while a further 6,392 MW is being allocated to planned maintenance.
Over the past 24 hours, two generating units at the Kendal and Lethabo power stations have been brought back into operation. At the same time, two generating units at Camden Power Station were taken off line for repairs.
Delays in the repair of more units at the Kendal (1), Tutuka (1) and Medupi (2) power stations are contributing to further capacity problems.
