Weeks before it officially goes on sale, Mazda has listed the South African starting price of its new CX-60.

The SUV slots in at the top of the automaker’s local line-up at a starting price of R739,800 – a R224,200 premium over the CX-5.

Whether the listing of the price was accidental remains in question, as the CX-60 product page doesn’t mention a word of its window sticker or any of its specifications, and neither do the other outlets the manufacturer usually posts information on.

As such, we are still in the dark on what the new Mazda will offer, what is going to propel it, or how many variants there will be, though we will find out the smaller details soon enough since the CX-60 is penned in to make its debut before the end of July, the manufacturer previously confirmed.

What to expect

The new CX-60 is quite a bit larger than the current CX-5, standing 170mm longer and 45mm taller while measuring the same width.

In international markets it can be had with a plug-in-hybrid driveline as well as with petrol or diesel engines, however, Mazda already said we won’t be getting the plug-in specification so expect to see a fossil-fuel motor on offer locally.

In Australia and the UK, the CX-60 is sold with a 3.3-litre turbo-diesel powertrain generating 147kW or 187kW, or with a 3.3-litre, turbo-petrol unit putting out 209kW, each one supported by a 48V mild-hybrid system and eight-speed automatic transmission.

It remains to be seen which one of these will make it to South Africa, or if Mazda will employ one of the many other engines in its arsenal on local soil.

As the carmaker’s new flagship, the CX-60 is bound to offer plenty of creature comforts.

Taking the CX-5 as a benchmark, we anticipate the newcomer will at the very least provide nice-to-haves such as automated LED lights, automatic wipers, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, leather upholstery, hill-hold assist, a reverse camera with parking sensors, and keyless entry and start.

In the UK it also gets a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment centre with smartphone mirroring as standard, but we’ll have to wait and see if the local models do, too.

According to the Mazda SA website, eight exterior colours will then be afforded in the CX-60 customisation department namely Arctic White, Deep Blue Crystal, Jet Black, Machine Grey, Platinum Quartz, Rhodium White, Sonic Silver, and Soul Red Crystal.
