Eskom has appointed Bheki Nxumalo as its new head of generation with immediate effect.
According to the power supplier, Nxumalo’s career in the energy sector spans more than 20 years during which he was promoted from junior to senior and finally executive level.
“We have been looking for a head of generation for a while and it was very difficult to find a suitable candidate who could step in immediately,” said Calib Cassim, interim head of Eskom.
“We need someone who can passionately drive the execution of the recovery plan, while inspiring our staff to give it their all. It recently occurred to us that we already have the candidate in Nxumalo. He is a business leader who is comfortable with management, people and the technical aspects of the role.”
Nxumalo will report directly to Cassim. Before his new appointment, he was the head of Eskom Enterprise and Eskom Rotek Industries. Nxuma was previously head of generation at Eskom. He started in the position on 1 July 2019 but was moved to head of new projects in August 2020.
According to Eskom, Nxumalo has extensive operational, power station management and production experience. He was the power station manager at two of Eskom’s power stations and the general manager at Kusile.
“We approached Nxumalo to consider the role. He naturally took his time to reflect on our request and discuss it with his family and advisors. We were excited to hear that he decided to take on the challenge. He is clearly the best person for the job,” Cassim said.
According to Nxumal, it is an honor for him to have been asked to serve as head of power generation at this critical time. “I grew up in Eskom and strongly believe that Eskom has the technical and managerial ability to turn things around. The majority of Eskom employees are passionate about their work and the company.”
Cassim thanked Thomas Conradie, who has acted as head of revival for the past few months, for his selfless leadership and commitment.
