A young mother of three children was arrested after she allegedly threw her newborn baby into a pit toilet in Bosbokrand, Mpumalanga.
According to Brig. Selvy Mohlala, police spokesperson, the 23-year-old mother threw her baby away in a pit toilet at a male friend’s house in Matangaleni Trust near Mkhuhlu.
The woman apparently went into labor shortly before midnight on Tuesday evening and gave birth to a baby boy. She then allegedly threw the boy into the toilet.
The man with whom the woman was visiting suspected trouble and called the police and emergency services. The boy was safely rescued from the pit toilet.
The mother was arrested and taken to a hospital with the boy for treatment. The woman will stand trial on charges of attempted murder and is currently under police guard in the hospital.
According to Mohlala, the woman will appear in the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court soon.
