Due to a shortage of generation capacity, phase 6 load shedding was introduced at 4:00 PM on Wednesday.
It will be implemented until Thursday at 05:00. Phase 5 load shedding will then apply until Thursday at 16:00.
This pattern will be in effect until further notice.
More than 16,700 MW of generating capacity is currently unavailable while 5,807 MW is unavailable due to planned maintenance.
Two generating units at the Kriel power station have been brought back into service over the past 24 hours, but at the same time a generating unit at the Duvha power station has broken down.
According to Eskom, delays in the return of a unit at the Camden, Kendal, Lethabo, Medupi and Tutuka power stations contributed to the capacity constraints.
The increase in demand after the long weekend and the reopening of schools is believed to have put additional pressure on the power grid.
