The world’s most expensive sandwich, a grilled cheese sandwich worth $214 (almost R4 000) is on sale at a restaurant in New York on national grilled cheese day (April 12).
The restaurant, Serendipity 3, says the Quintessential Grilled Cheese will be available on its menu for a short time. This restaurant is known for its luxurious concoctions.
“We are bringing back yet another Guinness World Record snack for a limited time,” the restaurant announced on social media.
The bun is made with thick slices of rare Caciocavallo Podolico cheese, which is produced in southern Italy from the milk of podolica cows. These cows graze freely and eat pungent aromatic grasses such as fennel, licorice, juniper bush, laurel and wild strawberries. It infuses the milk with sweet aromatic flavors. There are only about 25,000 of these special cows and they only secrete milk between May and June. This makes this cheese one of the best and rarest in the world, explains Serendipity 3.
The restaurant needs 48 hours notice to order this special sandwich.
According to Guinness World Records the Quintessential Grilled Cheese is served on two slices of French Pullman champagne bread made with Dom Perignon champagne and edible gold flakes. White truffle butter is used with the rare Caciocavallo Podolico cheese. The sandwich is served with a South African lobster tomato bisque as a dipping sauce.
