The new Renault Captur will require a minimum payment of R10,000 per month if bought on a finance plan, according to a calculation by TopAuto.

The French crossover is available in two trim levels – Zen and Intens – with a single engine shared between them.

The powertrain in question is a 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol unit, providing a total of 113kW and 270Nm.

Gear changes are handled by a seven-speed automatic transmission, and the front-wheel-drive car is able to return a fuel consumption figure of 6.6l/100km.

Performance-wise, the Captur reaches 100km/h in 9.8 seconds before maxing out at 193km/h.

Standard equipment on the Renault consists of LED headlights and daytime running lights, rain-sensing wipers, 17-inch wheels, automatic climate control, a multifunction steering wheel, front and rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, hill assist, cruise control, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 7-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Intens specification adds on top a wireless charger, ambient lighting, a synthetic leather steering wheel, an electronic handbrake, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, 17-inch black alloy wheels, and larger screens measuring 9 inches diagonally.

Monthly payments

To calculate what the monthly payments on the new Renault would be, we can use the following formula:

  • Car price – R454,999/R499,999
  • Payment term – 60 terms (5 years)
  • Interest – 11.25%
  • Deposit – 0%
  • Balloon – No balloon payment
  • Extras – No optional extras

From this, we can determine that the Captur will require a minimum payment of R10,045 per month for the Zen, or R11,029 per month for the Intens.

Financial experts then recommend that you do not spend more than 20% of your gross monthly salary on vehicle payments.

This means South Africans looking to take home the crossover need to earn between R50,225 per month and R55,145 per month to be able to afford the vehicle.

It bears mentioning that this sum does not account for fuel, insurance, or maintenance, all of which need to be considered when looking for your next car.
