Jonnas Tebogo Mpete (39), a police officer at the railway unit in Silverton, appeared in the British Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of murdering his pregnant ex-wife.
Mpete allegedly went to the British Hospital where Ntombizodwa Khumalo (35) was working on 5 April. She was a switchboard operator at the hospital’s reception.
“When he arrived at the hospital, he fired several shots at Khumalo and then handed himself in at the British police station,” says Lumka Mahanjana, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
Mpete disclosed to the court through his lawyer that he had been found guilty on charges of corruption on a previous occasion. He is expected to be sentenced in this case in the specialized commercial crime court in Pretoria on 19 April 2023.
The court also heard that Khumalo obtained a protection order against the accused in 2021.
“The case has been adjourned until 21 April 2023 for further investigation regarding the application for bail,” added Mahanjana.
