At least five people were killed and many injured in Monday afternoon’s chain collision on the N3 in KwaZulu-Natal.
The N3 between Hilton and Cedara was closed for hours and was only reopened shortly before midnight.
According to the provincial department of transport, at least five trucks, eight minibus taxis and 22 cars were involved in the collision.
Foggy and rainy conditions may have contributed to the collision, but the specific cause is under investigation.
Scores of people were injured in the collision and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The uMngeni Municipality made the town hall in Hilton available on Monday evening for motorists who needed a place to stay.
Sipho Hlomuka, MEC for transport in KwaZulu-Natal, is full of praise for the various emergency services that were involved. “We would like to express our deepest condolences to all the families affected and wish a speedy recovery to all those who sustained injuries.
“We want to commend all the emergency response teams for the work they did. We are extremely disappointed by all the fatal accidents recorded during the Easter weekend.”
