Senior employees of the Fort Hare University in the Eastern Cape are among the five suspects who were arrested on Tuesday charges of murder and corruption appeared in court.
It is not yet known how many of the suspects were employed at the university and what positions they held. The police are expected to issue a statement in this regard soon.
Lirandzu Themba, Police Minister Bheki Cele’s spokesperson, says the men will remain in custody until their case is heard again on 6 May. They are then expected to formally apply for bail.
The men’s arrest and appearance follows January’s assassination attack on Prof. Sakhela Buhlungu in which his bodyguard, Mboneli Vesele, was killed. Peet Roets, the university’s fleet manager, was murdered in May last year.
Buhlungu said outside the court on Tuesday that the university has great appreciation for the dedication and professionalism of the task teams involved in the investigation.
The professor is also convinced that other people, in addition to the five suspects, are involved in the crimes.
“It cannot be that these five people did not have assistance and support.”
