A suspected gang member who is said to be linked to a series of airport robberies in Johannesburg was arrested in Houghton in Johannesburg this past weekend.
Xolani Fihla, spokesperson for the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police, says officers from the secret response unit were on patrol in the city center on Saturday when they received information that a white BMW had been used in an armed robbery in Bryanston.
The car was reportedly spotted in Yeoville.
According to Fihla, the officers involved stopped the vehicle at Houghton Drive and St. Patrick Road Intercept.
“When the vehicle and driver were searched, officers found an unlicensed firearm in his possession. Stolen property, including an iPad, iPhone, laptop and four suitcases containing, among other things, clothes, was also found in the vehicle,” said Fihla.
The owner of the stolen goods was called to the scene and, according to Fihla, confirmed that he and his family were robbed on their way home from OR Tambo Airport. A firearm was apparently also pointed at these victims during the robbery.
The man also identified the stolen property.
The suspect is currently being held at Hillbrow Police Station and may also be linked to other similar airport-related robberies.
