Two suspected robbers were shot dead in Centurion on Saturday when the police attacked a group of armed suspects who were apparently planning a transit robbery.
The suspects were intercepted in John Vorster Drive, said Brig. Athlenda Mathe, police spokesperson, said.
A shootout broke out and two of the suspected robbers were fatally wounded. The AK47s were seized.
Mathe confirmed that one of the deceased is a former police officer who was dismissed from the service in 2018 due to corruption.
The latest incident comes just two days after nine suspects who were believed to be planning a transit robbery were killed in a shootout with the police.
Members of the Gauteng police’s tactical response team received information at around 06:00 on Thursday that suspects were apparently planning the robbery.
The police rushed to the given address in Sebokeng, Vanderbijlpark, where a shootout broke out between a group of armed suspects and the police.
Eight suspects were pronounced dead at the scene, while the ninth suspect died in hospital. Three more suspects were injured and also taken to the nearest hospital for medical treatment.
The police confiscated six guns, six commercial units of ready-to-use explosives, as well as four vehicles.
