A man from Mpumalanga who tried to bribe an official of the Special Investigation Unit (SUE) will now spend four years in prison.
Sipho Mpendulo Mapalala was sentenced to four years in prison – without the option of a fine – after pleading guilty to a charge of corruption. He was already arrested in August 2021.
Mapalala was arrested after he offered the SOE official R50 000 to make a case against his sister “disappear”, says col. Katlego Mogale, police spokesperson for the Falcons.
The case against her is related to the acquisition of personal protective equipment. The sister is an official of the department of public works in Mpumalanga.
Mapalala contacted the SOE official and requested a meeting. “They got together and he asked the SOE official to drop the case against his sister. After an amount was agreed upon, Mapalala went to get the money. He handed it over and was arrested immediately afterwards,” says Mogale.
The police also confiscated the almost R64 000 extra that Mapalala had with him, in addition to the bribe money.
