Crossovers are rapidly turning into one of South Africa’s favourite vehicle types, with several brands bringing in new models in response to consumer demand.
Unfortunately, one area that has seen diminished support is the entry-level segment, as there are only seven mini-SUVs left with a sticker price of under R300,000.
Even worse, two of these models – the Suzuki Vitara Brezza and the Toyota Urban Cruiser – are scheduled to be discontinued this year, leaving South Africans with only five affordable crossovers.
Toyota has announced that it will be bringing the new Urban Cruiser Hyryder to the country, but warned that it will be significantly more expensive than the outgoing model.
Suzuki, meanwhile, has two new models planned in the Fronx and Grand Vitarathough the latter will be a far more premium offering than either the Vitara Breeze or the Vitara.
The Fronx is therefore expected to be the Brezza’s replacement in the affordable space, as it is based on the Baleno hatchback that launched last year.
Other brands that have entries in the sub-R300,000 range include Renault, Mahindra, Nissan, and Chery, and Suzuki even has an additional unit in the form of the Ignis.

The Suzuki Vitara Brezza and Toyota Urban Cruiser are still on sale as of the time of writing, as neither of their respective replacements has had their pricing and launch dates revealed yet.
