A former police constable was sentenced to 20 years in prison after being accused of armed robbery.
Sandile Edward Mroqoza (40) was part of a daring robbery in Kraaifontein in May 2016. Officers from G4S were transporting money at the time when a marked police van stopped them and forced them to stop.
Two suspects, dressed in police uniforms, got out of the front of the van and another four, in civilian clothes, jumped out of the back.
“The suspects threatened the driver of the armored vehicle with firearms and forced him to open the back of the vehicle. They pulled the police vehicle behind the G4S vehicle, where they emptied the safes,” says Zinzi Hani, spokeswoman for the Falcons.
More than R2.3 million was looted.
The driver and crew member of the armored vehicle’s firearms were stolen and the crew member was injured when he was hit over the head with a firearm.
Mroqoza, then attached to the Nyanga police, was arrested shortly afterwards.
“A black bag with money was found in a fridge in his house,” says Hani.
Further investigation also showed that Mroqoza used the police van and that this was an indication that he was at the crime scene.
Brig. Piet Bergh, acting provincial police chief in the Western Cape, praised the team for their investigative work and says it also sends a message to police officers that those who are guilty of crime will be punished.
