Three men are behind bars after they were caught with a herd of stolen cattle in the back of their minivan.
On Thursday morning, members of the police were patrolling the R510 between Northam and Rustenburg in the North West, when they spotted the minibus near Phokeng. The officers found snuff in the nose and searched the van with its darkened windows, says Lt. Col. Amanda Funani, police spokesperson in the North West.
In the back were 16 stolen sheep worth around R48 000.
“The three men in the van were arrested after they could not give a proper explanation about the sheep,” says Funani.
The sheep were later linked to a case of livestock theft in the Northam area.
The police are still looking for a fourth person involved.
The three other men are expected to appear in the Tlhabane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
The patrols form part of increased police visibility during the Easter weekend. Lt. Gen. Sello Kwena, provincial police chief, praised the officers for their vigilance.
