Cape Town’s libraries recovered about R1 million worth of books during a recent penalty-free week, but there are still thousands of books outstanding.
Less than a month ago, libraries appealed to the public to return around 40,000 items, worth around R4.6 million. These items were loaned out in 2022, but never returned.
“There are still more than 30,000 of the items outstanding, but we want to thank everyone who did comply with the request,” says Patricia van der Ross, mayoral committee member for community services and health.
“Many more people have time to visit the library during the school holidays. The items that were handed in can now be re-circulated to inform and entertain others.”
A total of 7 308 items (magazines excluded) worth R827 341 were handed in.
On top of the stack were seven copies of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw by Jeff Kinney. Ten copies of this book are still outstanding.
Other popular items handed in include Goldilocks and the Three Bears, little red riding hooda Grade 12 study guide, Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth in Where’s Wally Now?
“We are very happy that Wally found his way back to the library because when items are not returned it means that others cannot enjoy the stories or resources. It also has a financial impact on the library service.”
Van der Ross says other highlights are the many programs that Cape Town’s libraries offer during school holidays. “There are a number of activities that beat boredom and a large part of them are the items that are offered to borrow or take home. There is always time to return books or other materials – don’t think you missed the opportunity.”
