My soul will glory in the Lord; the humble will hear it and rejoice. (Psalm 34:3)
Yesterday we talked about Paul and the example he is for us of a life of humility. We looked briefly at 2 Corinthians 12 regarding Paul’s view of the thorn in his flesh. He makes the following statement in verses 5 and 6: “Of such a man I will boast, but of myself I will not boast, except in my weaknesses. For if I should boast, I would not be a fool, for I would speak the truth; but I leave it behind, so that no one may esteem me higher than what he sees of me or what he hears of me.” Paul says in Galatians 6:14: “But as for me, I may never glory, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.”
That’s the bottom line, isn’t it? We have nothing else to boast about except the cross of Jesus Christ. It doesn’t matter how many degrees we have, how much money or where we live – we cannot take these things with us because they have no eternal value. These are things that can be used in the service of God and to glorify Him. We must see them simply as means to an end – they must not define who we are. The only thing that can define us is our relationship with Jesus Christ. “Blessed is the man who puts his trust in the Lord and does not turn to the haughty and the servants of lies” (Psalm 40:5).
“We praise this: the testimony of our conscience that we have been in the simplicity and purity of God, not in carnal wisdom, but in the grace of God in the world, and especially with you” (2 Corinthians 1:12). God does not share his glory with others. “Every haughty heart is an abomination to the Lord” (Proverbs 16:5). Commit yourself to Him and commit yourself to walk humbly before Him.
My Father, I come to you and I bow before your throne. I will glory in nothing but the cross of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior. I give You the glory, Lord. Help me to walk in humility. Amen.
