Well known in Lewis Carroll Alice in Wonderland the white queen told Alice that she believed in six impossible things before breakfast. Everything in the story is about believing in the impossible. Unlike Alice, at least you don’t have to believe in the impossible to take part in an international mass ride that will be held on Saturday 6 May this year. The ride is in celebration of International Female Ride Day (IFRD) and will conclude with a Alice in Wonderland-picnic at the Avianto clubhouse at Muldersdrift in Gauteng.
There are several departure points all over Gauteng and each group will be led by an experienced rider. It should go smoothly and safely.
The IFRD first took place in 2007 and this year will be the 17th presentation. The goal of the IFRD is to host a global women’s motorcycle and scooter ride that encourages all women to “just ride”.
It provides the ideal opportunity for women to act as role models for the growing community of female motorcyclists and to celebrate the achievements of women in motorsport.
The International Female Ride Day is presented annually worldwide in 120 countries, and if the previous rides are any indication of their organizational ability, then this year should also be a huge success. In addition to the serious logistical arrangements for the day, the goal of the organizers is to make the day relaxed and enjoyable for the riders. It also gives everyone an opportunity to make new friends.
It is then here where the Alice in Wonderland– theme for this year’s income. The Muldersdrift picnic is hosted by Alice and her friends. All your favorite characters from the story will be there!
“We’re really trying to encourage women to ride more and what could be better than a picnic with your fellow riders,” said Kerry Puzey of Biker’s Warehouse, one of the organizers of the IFRD mass ride.
Registration is essential and your R50 entry fee covers your participation in the mass ride, entry to the wonderland party, a gift pack and a picnic basket. Once you’ve registered, all the details will be sent to you, including route and starting point information, and you can pre-order great IFRD merchandise and your picnic basket. If you don’t fancy a picnic, you can order a pizza from the Avianto clubhouse on the day. A cash bar will also be available to clear the dust from your throat after the ride.
Of course, your spouse is also welcome, and dressing appropriately is definitely encouraged. There will be a prize for the best outfit of the day, and there will also be a host of prizes up for grabs with various lucky draws.
“International Female Ride is about celebrating the growth in female motorcyclists and keeping the momentum going. We also want to encourage more women to ride motorcycles and scooters,” said Mercia Jansen, Motul Regional Manager for Southern and Eastern Africa. “I myself will lead one of the off-road groups and do my part to encourage women to participate. I am excited about this chance to share with women the passion, fun and camaraderie that can be found on two wheels,” she added.
