“Then the Lord asked: ‘Should I myself go with you and give you peace?’.” – Exodus 33:14
I heard in a discussion program last week that approximately 18 million people in South Africa are dependent on the grants that are made available from government sources in order to meet their needs.
We are all aware of the high unemployment rate in South Africa. It is especially young people who desperately and despondently look to the future and wonder if there will be a solution.
In another discussion I hear that more than two million people experience hunger daily; of them more than 600,000 are children. It is a sad reality and one trusts that there will be a solution.
South Africa is a country with many problems. In almost every area of society there are challenges and uncertainty. Without going into the details, because it is more than well known, this state of affairs has a negative influence on the morale of South Africans.
Mention has often been made of the anger that underlies South African society. Just a little irritation is greeted with hand gestures and unfriendly words, often spicy words.
Road rage is not unknown in South Africa.
So much of the violence that is committed in South Africa takes place within the four walls of people’s homes. Obviously, this cannot be policed.
The stress that people experience on a daily basis takes them home with them and sometimes it is proverbially the last straw that breaks the camel’s back.
Believers in South Africa have a special vocation to make our countrymen aware of the peace that God gives, peace that cannot be robbed by circumstances.
This peace is founded in the knowledge that God is also on the way with this world, with South Africa and with every citizen.
The Lord is not desperate. He does not struggle to meet the challenges facing the world.
It is difficult to understand what God is busy with, but that he is busy, in the interest of his children, cannot be doubted.
Things around you may not be what you want them to be. We do not live in an ideal world. It is broken all around us.
It won’t stay that way forever.
Take heart, God has not lost control.
Exchange your feelings of desperation, hopelessness, discouragement, fear and anxiety and receive the free gift of God’s peace in all circumstances.
Then share that peace with other people.
