A first team rugby player from Hoër Jongenskool Paarl (Boishaai) is in an induced coma after sustaining a serious head injury during the North-South rugby tournament in Pretoria on Tuesday evening.
Boishaai and Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool (Affies) faced each other and 16-year-old Chris Jordaan suffered a hard blow to the head in this match. Chris is a gr. 11-learner at Boishaai.
The young rugby player, Boishaai’s eighth man, suffered bleeding on the brain and was rushed to a hospital in Pretoria where he underwent an operation later that evening to relieve the swelling on his brain.
“The doctor says it was a very hard blow – like a car accident,” says his father, also Chris.
Jordaan told Rhewal on Wednesday that the doctor was satisfied with how the operation went and that Chris was placed in a 48-hour induced coma in an attempt to relieve the swelling on his brain.
Sean Erasmus, Boishaai’s coach, told Rhewal this morning that it does not appear that there was any illegal smashing on the field last night when Chris was injured.
“Chris took a hit somewhere in the game. Our physiotherapist immediately ran onto the field to help him and he lost consciousness. He was rushed by ambulance to a hospital for medical treatment.”
