A 50-year-old Chinese man must serve at least two years in prison for illegal rhino horn trade in a South African prison, after which he will be deported to China.
Shuihau Chen (50) was found guilty in the Kempton Park District Court on Tuesday of trading in rhino horn without a permit. He was sentenced to five years in prison or he must pay a fine of R500 000.
He was also sentenced to two years in prison after being found guilty of two counts of breaching the Immigration Act. In this case, he does not have the option of paying a fine and the court further ordered that he be deported to China after serving his sentence.
Chen was already arrested by the Falcons in Middelburg in 2019 and has been in custody since then.
At the time, his Volkswagen Tiguan was also seized, which according to the Falcons is worth R400 000.
