Two innocent bystanders were shot dead on Wednesday by armed suspects who were suspected to be involved in a transit robbery on Putfontein Road in Ekurhuleni.
According to Brig. Athlenda Mathe, police spokesperson, said the suspects fired randomly at the bystanders. Two men were pronounced dead at the scene while another injured victim was taken to a nearby hospital.
The police have now launched a large-scale search for the suspects. Three getaway vehicles have since been located.
“The police deployed its crime scene experts and bomb squad to investigate the incident, while a multidisciplinary team was deployed to track down the armed suspects,” said Mathe.
“The police have already come across three getaway vehicles including a burnt-out gold colored BMW sedan, a silver colored sedan [maak onbekend] and a white Audi A1.”
Mathe says an unknown amount of money was taken during the robbery.
