This attitude must be in you which was also in Christ Jesus. He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, yes, the death of the cross. (Philippians 2:5, 8)
Without a doubt, Jesus is the perfect example of how to live humbly. Paul reminds us of this in Philippians 2. He exhorts us to have the same attitude as Jesus. Jesus was willing to humble Himself by being obedient unto death. Why? So that you and I can have eternal life. Jesus lived his life on earth as an example of humility and obedience to God, our Father.
Jesus came to earth to do the will of his Father. When He became man, He depended on His Father to give Him the strength to do the work that God had determined for Him. “Jesus then answered and said to them: Truly, truly I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself unless He sees the Father doing it. Because everything He does, the Son does in the same way. I can do nothing of Myself. As I hear, I judge; and my judgment is just, because I do not seek mine, but the will of the Father who sent me” (Johannes 5:19, 30).
Jesus’ greatest test was in the garden of Gethsemane. There He had to submit Himself to the will of his Father. He had to accept his fate to die on the cross at Calvary. If you have a few minutes, re-read this scripture in Matthew 26:36-46. Three times Jesus prayed, and three times He submitted Himself to the will of His Father. “My Father, if this cup cannot pass from Me without me drinking it, let Your will be done” (Matthew 26:42). All things considered, humility is basically submitting to the will of God. If you walk in God’s will and do the things He tells you to do, you will be humble. You will know without a doubt that only He can accomplish the things He does through you. It is not you, but Him.
My Father God, I thank You for Jesus, Your Son. Jesus, thank you for being the perfect example of how to live humbly before the Father. I want to follow your example. Amen.
