Adv. The arrest of Hassan Ebrahim Kajee, a lawyer for the State Attorney’s Office, is welcomed by the Special Investigation Unit (SUE).
Kajee was arrested by the Hawks on April 1 on various charges of fraud. He appeared in the Johannesburg regional court on Monday and was released on bail of R20 000, says Kaizer Kganyago, spokesperson for the SOE. The case was adjourned until 25 May 2023.
“The state attorney’s office regularly appoints legal advisers to handle cases on behalf of state agencies. Kajee was appointed to represent the state in various cases.”
Kajee’s arrest follows an investigation by the SOE which revealed that he had allegedly artificially inflated invoices; issued invoices for services that were never rendered; and asked too much for services that were supposedly provided.
“Kajee also issued invoices according to which he worked more hours daily than there are hours in a day.”
The SOE handed over the evidence to the National Prosecuting Authority for further action and Kajee was subsequently arrested.
“The SOE is meanwhile busy with a civil case in the special tribunal against adv. Kajee to recover about R27 million for damages suffered by the state, due to the alleged corruption and underhand relationship between the former head of the office of the state attorney in Johannesburg, Gustav Lekabe, and Kajee. Lekabe allegedly appointed Kajee to represent the state in a series of cases where the applicant was billed for legal fees that were never delivered; was billed twice for the same work done; and duplicate invoices sent to the state attorney’s office.”
