Members of the Piet Retief border police and members of the South African National Defense Force came across 49 bags of marijuana, weighing around 472,144 kg, during a joint operation on Sunday evening. The estimated street value is almost R2 million.
Brig. Selvy Mohlala, spokesperson for the police, says members of the community passed on a tip to the police and they collaborated with the SANW to carry out the raid.
“The premises were monitored and a group of suspected daytime gas smugglers was marketed. When the team wanted to arrest them, they ran away and crossed the border to Eswatini (Swaziland). No one has been arrested.”
In a separate incident in Jeppes Reef, a 23-year-old man was arrested when he was caught with 1.12 kg of marijuana with an estimated street value of R4 700. He will appear in court soon.
Two more suspects from Eswatini, respectively 30 and 32 years old, will also appear in the Bosbokrand Magistrate’s Court soon after they were caught with 11 bags of marijuana (157 kg) with an estimated value of R625 000. They were believed to be on their way to Tzaneen when they were stopped.
