Four people were arrested this past weekend for the alleged fraud of R4.9 million at Eskom.
Nozipho Ntuli (35), George Edward Sekatane (43), Alfred Lebohang Sekatane (60) and Thulani Harris Mkhabela (40) were caught on Friday during a joint operation by the Hawks in Emalahleni (Witbank), Mpumalanga.
The four appeared in the town magistrate’s court on charges of fraud and corruption.
According to Capt. Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi, spokeswoman for the Hawks, Ntuli worked at the Duvha power station between 2016 and 2019 and was allegedly involved in awarding contracts without following the prescribed procedure.
“The contracts were awarded to the companies Phoenix and Itereleng Masheleng which belonged to Ntuli’s boyfriend, George, and Hustle Hard which belonged to Mkhabela,” says Sekgotodi.
“It is further alleged that when the contracts were awarded, George was in prison and Alfred was responsible for taking information and documents from Eskom to George in prison and vice versa.”
The loss suffered by Eskom due to the alleged fraudulent activities is estimated at R4.9 million.
The four were released on bail on Friday. George was granted bail of R30 000 because he has pending cases against him.
The other four accused were each released on bail of R10 000.
The case is expected to appear again on July 5.
