Good cooperation between the Hawks, Hoedspruit’s farm guard and other entities led to the foiling of two suspected rhino poachers’ plans to poach.
The Falcons, together with members of the farm guard, crime intelligence, National Security and C-Dass (Crime Data Analysis & Support Services) received information about the planned rhino poaching last week.
According to Capt. Matimba Maluleke, spokesperson for the Hawks, the team was informed about a vehicle with two occupants that was allegedly on its way to Gravelotte, Limpopo, to poach rhinos.
“The team immediately responded to the information and spotted the vehicle with the two occupants on the R521, between Tzaneen and Hoedspruit, and pulled it off the road,” says Maluleke.
“The car was searched and an unlicensed .308 rifle and 14 cartridges hidden in a plastic bag under the hood were found and confiscated.”
The men, aged 33 and 42 respectively, were arrested and are expected to appear in the Hoedspruit Magistrate’s Court on Monday. They are charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
