There is an expression that says not to sell the bear’s skin until you have shot it.
Blitzbokke realized this in Hong Kong on Sunday in the World Rugby sevens tournament when they were beaten 7-5 by Argentina in the play-off for fifth place.
The Argentines scored a try with two minutes of playing time which was converted to take a 7-0 lead.
With only a minute of playing time left, Ricardo Duarttee dived over for a try to spark the Blitzbokke’s hopes.
He flew up, ran to the deadline and shouted his apparent pent-up emotions to the spectators.
But he still had to take the goal kick to make the Blitzboks draw level… which he failed to do.
The Argentine headed the ball from kick-off, which made the spectators squeal with delight, because playing time had expired.
It was yet another mediocre tournament for the Blitzboks, one that was plagued by injuries.
They had wins over Ireland, Kenya and America but were beaten by New Zealand, Fiji and Argentina. They therefore remain in a race to finish among the top four teams in the standings in order to automatically qualify for the Olympic Games in 2014 in France.
Scorers: Argentina 7 (0): Three: Joaquin Pellandini. Goal kick: Pellandini. South Africa 5 (0): Three: Ricardo Duarttee.
