Aiden Markram, along with David Miller and Sisanda Magala, were the stars in the Proteas’ convincing 146-run win against the Netherlands at the Wanderers.
Markram scored his first ODI century and he was eventually bowled out for 175 runs. He shared a brisk partnership of 199 runs for the fifth wicket with Miller (91 runs) to ensure that South Africa could score 370/8 in its allotted 50 overs.
Although Musa Ahmed and Max O’Dowd then frustrated the Protea bowlers, Sisanda Magala (5/43) took the wind out of the visitors’ sails.
The Netherlands lost their last six wickets for just 31 runs and South Africa won the match by 146 runs.
The series victory also means that the Proteas now occupy eighth place in the Super League standings and their path to the World Cup tournament in India looks significantly easier.
Now we just have to keep our fingers crossed that Bangladesh will play decently with Ireland in May.
“We did exactly what we needed to do to collect league points to qualify for the World Cup. We will have to see what the future holds for us, but I am positive about our batting and bowling,” Temba Bavuma (captain) said.
Markram was named the player of the match as well as the series.
“It is a batsman’s main objective to score runs and get a good score on the scoreboard. I am grateful for the way everything turned out and I believe that the team is on the right track; in red and in white-ball cricket,” said Markram.
