Then he said to me: Do not be afraid, Daniel; for from the first day that you set your heart to heed and humble yourself before the face of your God, your words have been heard, and for your words’ sake I have come. (Daniel 10:12)
Daniel’s path of faith did not begin in the lion’s den. No, it was an outgrowth of a life of humble obedience and faithfulness to God. As a young man, Daniel was captured along with his friends Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. They were taken from their homes in Jerusalem to Babylon. Daniel and his friends were initially chosen to serve in the king’s palace. They got the best food and education.
We read in Daniel 1:8: “Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the food of the king or with the wine he drank.” God obtained favor for him from the chief of the eunuchs. God honored his obedience and as we know, he was perfectly healthy with the simple diet he chose. Even in the face of personal danger, it was not an option for Daniel to stop worshiping and praising God daily. The king was very upset because Daniel would be thrown into the lion’s den. The next morning, Daniel said to the king: “My God sent his angel and shut the mouths of the lions, so that they did me no harm, because I was found innocent before Him” (Daniel 6:23).
God used Daniel all his life to bring his messages to his people. In chapter 10 the following is said to Daniel: ” … for from the first day that you set your heart on giving heed and humbling yourself before the face of your God, your words have been heard…” (verse 12). Daniel’s life was firmly grounded in his relationship with God. He was steadfast throughout his life. Daniel could rightly say: “The people who know their God will hold fast and act” (Daniel 11:32).
My Father, I bow in your presence. I ask You to help me to be steadfast in obedience and faithfulness to You. Lord, help me in Jesus’ Name to walk humbly before You. Lord, I want to know You as Daniel knew You. Amen.
