These days it is not necessarily a foregone conclusion that the Proteas will beat the Netherlands on the cricket field – for example think of that T20 World Cup showdown in Adelaide.

But Temba Bavuma, along with players like Sisanda Magala, Aiden Markram and Tabraiz Shamsi saw to it that South Africa trumped its opponents in Benoni by eight wickets.

In doing so, the Proteas earned much-needed points on the Super League standings to make their way to the upcoming One Day Cricket World Cup in India a little more even.

South Africa will now also have to win Sunday’s showdown to book a more direct flight to India. At the same time, they will be keeping their fingers crossed that Ireland lose at least one game in their series against Bangladesh.

Bavuma (90*) and Aiden Markram (51*) now ran amok among the Dutch bowlers, while Tabraiz Shamsi (3/25) and Sisanda Magala (3/37) earlier put the visitors’ batsmen on the back foot.

Job well done for the Proteas ✅

“I’m enjoying my cricket these days,” Bavuma said after the match.

The Protea one-day cricket captain ended the match with a boundary hit. His average in ODI cricket is currently a very healthy 54.47 and he hits his runs at a strike rate of 92.03.

“The players have confidence in each other’s abilities and my plans are much clearer these days.”

Netherlands 189/10 in 46.1 overs: Teja Nidamanuru 48, Tabraiz Shamis 3/25 and Sisanda Magala 3/37.

South Africa 190/2 in 30 overs: Temba Bavuma 90*, Aiden Markram 51* and Aryan Dutt 1/30.
