Five people lost their lives on Friday evening when two cars were involved in a collision on the R304 at Stellenbosch. Of the six occupants in the respective cars, only one person survived the horrific accident.
A case of culpable homicide is currently being investigated by the police.
Capt. FC van Wyk, police spokesperson, says officers were called to the Koelenhofpad at Stellenbosch shortly after 19:00 following reports that two cars were involved in a head-on collision.
The four occupants in one car, a white Volkswagen Polo, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The second car, a red Nissan Skyline, had two occupants, of whom only one survived.
“The driver of the Nissan was still trapped in the car when it caught fire and died in the fire,” he says.
The only survivor was treated at the scene before she was taken to a hospital.
Stuart Grobbelaar, spokesperson for the Stellenbosch municipality, says the municipality’s traffic and fire services “were quickly on the scene and helped the police and emergency services to secure and clean up the scene, as well as to help with the flow of traffic”.
The police’s investigation into the incident continues.
