A South African who immigrated to Australia years ago died after being struck by lightning on a golf course in Brisbane.
Dirk Kotze (56), originally from Sasolburg in the Free State, died in a hospital in Brisbane on Thursday morning after being struck by lightning almost three weeks ago.
The incident took place on March 12 at the Wantima golf course in Brendale. A crowdfunding page was set up after the incident to help with the hospital expenses. In the meantime, the family expressed their thanks for everyone’s support in a statement on the relevant page.
According to the family, Kotze was surrounded by loved ones when he passed away. “The trauma sustained by the incident and subsequent cardiac arrest was too significant for his body to recover. His family takes great comfort in the knowledge that he is now at peace and is sustained by his great faith in God with the knowledge of his final destination.”
Kotze is survived by his wife, Hannelé, daughter, Dané, and sons Tiaan and Duan.
“The entire family once again expresses their utmost gratitude to the members of the community and medics who worked tirelessly to save his life and to everyone in the community around the world who sent love, support and prayers.
“Dirk was a man known for having a great personality. His faith in God and love for people defined him – he would not hesitate to put his own life on hold to help someone else in need. His life touched many others and he will not soon be forgotten.”
According to the family, the money raised with the crowdfunding campaign will be used to cover the medical expenses and pay his daughter’s school fees.
