South Africans will again be without power for hours this weekend after Eskom announced the implementation of higher phase load shedding on Friday.
Phase 4 load shedding was introduced at 13:11 on Friday following a “higher than expected” demand for power. This will apply until Saturday morning at 05:00. After that, phase 3 load shedding will apply until Saturday at 16:00, followed by phase 4 which will then again apply until Sunday morning at 05:00.
This phase will be reduced to phase 2 by 16:00 on Sunday before phase 3 kicks in again until Monday morning at 05:00.
Eskom said on Friday that 15,388 MW of capacity is unavailable following an increase in breakdowns. Furthermore, a further 7,169 MW is allocated to planned maintenance work.
Two generating units at Eskom’s Lethabo and Medupi power stations have been brought back into operation over the past 24 hours, but at the same time two generating units at the Hendrina and Matimba power stations have given up respectively.
Two generating units at the Matla power station were also shut down for repairs.
Furthermore, there is a delay in the repair of generating units at the Camden, Kriel and Tutuka power plants. This causes further pressure on the power grid.
