Oscar Pistorius’ application for parole was rejected on Friday afternoon.
The Department of Correctional Services confirmed that it had received the parole board’s decision to reject Pistorius’ application.
According to the council, Pistorius “has not completed the minimum detention period” as set out by the highest court of appeal.
Pistorius can apply for parole again in August next year.
A parole hearing is this morning held outside the Atteridgeville prison in Pretoria.
June Steenkamp, Reeva’s mother, made representations to the parole board this morning and asked that Pistorius remain behind bars to serve the remainder of his sentence.
Steenkamp and Pistorius appeared separately before the parole board.
Barry, Reeva’s father, could not attend the parole hearing on Friday morning due to ill health.
Pistorius shot and killed Reeva in his home in Pretoria in the early hours of Valentine’s Day 2013 when he fired four shots through a bathroom door.
However, he denied that he killed her on purpose and maintains that he mistook Reeva for a burglar on that fateful night.
Pistorius, now 36 years old, has already served more than half of his 13-year prison sentence.
