The musician and songwriter Hansie Roodt has been active in the music industry since the age of 16 as a guitarist for other artists.
Hansie, who currently goes by Samantha Leonard The Contract 2-fame’s guitarist performs, but now makes his debut as a solo artist with the song “My wolf”.
The lyrics for “My wolf” were inspired by Hansie’s father, Hansie Roodt snr., the famous guitarist who died when Hansie was 16 years old, and Hansie’s father-in-law, the spiritual leader and musician, Jannie Pelser. Jannie is herself a very skilled piano player.
“My Wolf” is guaranteed to melt daddy’s hearts right through the couch. The song is from Hansie’s own pen and is dedicated to his little boy.
“I want my boy to know that he doesn’t have to back down for anything, and that he stands on big shoulders and is proud of me,” says Hansie about the message of “My wolf”.
“When I got married, I gained the most incredible father-in-law. He has one of the most beautiful hearts in the universe. One day I looked at my little boy and realized that the blood flowing through his veins was the blood of two enormous icons. He must know that.”
According to Hansie, “My wolf” is a precious song for him, as he lost his father at a young age.
“I want to make the most of the time my boy and I have together. I’m sure the lyrics of the song speak to every father. The pride, the hope and the protection.”
Hansie played the guitars for the song himself, while the drums and bass guitar were recorded live as this is the sound that Hansie likes. His wife sang the harmony parts.
“I don’t like it when everything is done by a computer and I hope people will appreciate it,” says Hansie, who also performs with Jeanette Pretorius in the group, Heuning.
For the concept of the music video for “My wolf”, Hansie used old videos of his father and father-in-law. Hansie then shows his boy on a screen who is grandfather Hansie and who is grandfather Jannie.
“It just emphasizes again that I want my son to know whose shoulders he stands on and that he doesn’t need to be afraid. Those who came before him achieved great things and he can too.”
The music video was shot in an empty church hall at Rant and Dal Prisma. Mike Ramasimong, Charles Geer, Houlson Beauty and Werner Maartens were involved in the video. Coert Erasmus directed.
“My wish is that ‘My wolf’ will encourage every dad, or really any parent, to immediately go to his son, hold him and tell him that he loves him incredibly.”
“My wolf” is available on all major digital platforms.
